
Wire rope and the word "cable" are frequently used interchangeably. Wire rope, on the other hand, generally refers to diameters greater than 3/8 inch. Sizes that are less than this are referred to as cords or cables. A strand is any group of two or more wires that are arranged tightly around a central wire.

For maximum effectiveness and safety, your elevator's operating panel, cables, and traveling cables should all be replaced after 20 years. Your elevator's controller and dispatcher should be replaced after 20 to 25 years of service.
While in use, hoist ropes will stretch, mostly as a result of construction stretch. It will not return to the rope once constructional stretch has taken place. With each application, a different amount of time is needed to remove the constructional stretch in a rope.
High-tech ropes for elevators are constructed of steel and other composite materials. Additionally, they are made up of multiple strands of wire that have been wrapped together in different sizes rather than being single wires. Over 150 strands of wire, carefully crafted to be strong, flexible, and long-lasting, can typically be found in a typical cable or rope.

Elevator hoist ropes need to be field lubricated throughout their service life because the factory-applied lubricant gradually disperses over the course of the hoist rope's operational life and because it is understood that the fiber core is not a lubricant reservoir.
